I thought coleagues would be interested to know that S O T I has just had its
3,000th visitor to the home page since we put a click counter on it in
mid-June. As the site becomes better known, we are also getting about the
same number of visitors coming straight in to subsidiary pages.

The wealth of material about sundials on S O T I is in large part due to the
kind help which has been given by many people round the world, whether in
providing original material, translating pages already on the site into other
languages, or moderating drafts of pages produced by someone else. If you
would like to help in any of these ways in 1997, please send me an E-mail.

One new development were everyone could help is in the local lists of
sundials. At present, we have lists for Sussex, Suffolk, Paris, Queyras,
Pays de Buech, Toronto. and the Netherlands.
 (see www.sundials.co.uk/favrituk.htm, favritfr.htm,favritna.htm and
favritnl.htm).

We all know how nice it is when we go to a new place, either on holiday or on
business, to have the locations of a few good sundials we might be able to
get to see. So if you could provide a list of between 3 and say 12 sundials
for
your home town, your local region, or any other locality you know well, it
would be
much appreciated. You will see from those we have already that there is no
set format - the basic minimum is the type of sundial and the address or
sufficient
indication for a stranger to get to see it. The list should only include
publicly
accessible sundials (and please don't include dials which are fragile or
easily portable since we don,t want to encourage vandalism or theft!).

So, if anyone can send me such a list, preferably in the body of an E-mail,
we would be most grateful. If any of the sundials have their pictures on the
Web,
please include the link. If you have available a photo of any of them,
please let
me know because we might be able to include that too later.

We also very much need help with translating the existing pages into French,
German, Spanish and Japanese. This needs a team of two, one to do the
translation and the other to act as moderator. (I can suggest moderators if
you need them)

A very happy 1997 to all gnomonists!
