Dear British Dialists:
According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, there is a new 132 ft. sundial in the new "Garden of Surprises" at Burghley House in Stamford England. According to the website at http://www.burghley.co.uk/ the Burghley House is "the largest and grandest house of the first Elizabethan age", and is open to the public. But the website doesn't show any photos of the sundial and only briefly mentions it. It was designed by a professor at Harvard University. They call it a "Longitude Dial". I have never heard of a longitude dial. What type of dial is it I wonder? Burghley is near Stamford in Lincolnshire, fairly close to Cambridge where the BSS conference will be held next week. Has anybody seen this dial yet? Would it be worth the trip up to see it? See you soon at the conference. John p.s. congratulations on the release of your 15 Royal Marines!
