hello Karlheinz, Zarbula's method uses the Indian circle method to find the substyle line on a declining vertical wall. Giovanni Zarbula painted many beautiful sundials in the alps near Briancon France between 1830 and 1870. The first step in his layout procedure was to mark the path of the shadow from a horizontal gnomon perpendicular to the wall. Intersection of the shadow line with a circle centered on the gnomon base establishes the substyle line, the projection of the polar gnomon on the vertical declining plane. This is clearly an application of the Indian Circle (Hindu Circle) technique for finding north to the vertical plane.
The presentation on Zarbula's Sundials by Roger Bailey and Allain Ferreira is available at www.walkingshadow.info Follow the links to sundials and the Zarbula presentation. Warning the PowerPoint file is quite large, about 80 MB because of all the pictures of Zarbula's sundials. Thanks for your comments in advance.
