Yes, each antenna must be set for the satellite and the location - and the time if you want to aim it. You are asking a satellite dish to become a sundial.

There are a few hundred satellites in geostationary orbit - each with their own assigned slot. So yes each dish would need to be as unique as a sundial.

But this could be very useful to the casual satellite user if they ever want to re-aim the dish - a common task if wind or impact causes it to move out of alignment. Re-aiming a dish then could be done with out aid and without a live connection. Kind of like resetting a sundial by the time of day.

I invented a device called a calibrated adjustable gnomon to be used for the purpose of aiming a satellite dish. http://sundialsetup.com I is very hard to make a product without partnering with dish manufactures since it requires a very accurate marking of center of the dish - or rather a very precise marking of the axis of focus. And it seems that any dish manufacturer can easily set this on their dish. Then once someone knows the satellite, the time and their location, anyone under the sun could aim a dish accurately.

Certainly any gnomon could be built onto the feed horn of the dish.

This really suggests an entire field of applied gnomonics. I am sure there must be many more applications.

Oeps!
It must be: Is each antenna "customer tailored"?
