Strange way of marking the roman "X" and its possible added volute!I see Luis.
I misunderstood your question. May I show you some German sundial
http://www.sullacrestadellonda.it/meridiane/fussen.htm? In the sundial numbers
it seems that the X shows always one leg volute (more or less) and it seem that
it was common in germany in the 15th – 16th century. I am Italian so my
experience with German way of write Roman number is limited. Maybe Reinhold can
be more specific.

I agree, In "its possible added volute" I meant later in time to the original,
I don't think they are there since the original making. Could not trace volutes
in the lateral written date. As I said, congratulations for a job well done.

No Reinhold and Luis, the volute are original. Look at the tird image of the
article you linked in your email (the volutes are visible also in other photos)
that is the photo before restoration. Go also to see the old photo numbered NK
12 in the article, you can see the volutes also there. The restorers made a
very good work.

  Dear Luis,

I agree with you! The restorer obviously has added these lines on the very
last day of her restoration work. I did not see these traces in the stone
before, even I had often been alone on the scaffold and very close to the
sundial and also taken so many photos at all light-situations. The restorer
should have better taken more care for the hour-lines for example! ...

  Kind regards, Reinhold

Congratulations Reinhold for the project and its final result.

  Dear friends!

I am very happy to inform you that the 533 years old sundial
of St. Nicolai in Zerbst was successfully restored because of my
recommendation!
Martin Luther has already looked up to this sundial, when he was preaching in
the big church.
A private money donation of a citizen of Zerbst to the "Förderkreis St.
Nicolai Zerbst e.V." has made it possible!

I have compiled a rich documentation of this restoration work within my link
