I did this (purging and generating a package from source with Michael's
patches), but it didn't help. Still wdm can't start wdmLogin and uses 100%CPU.

After some trial&error, I removed the line 
    (void) Signal (SIGCHLD, SIG_IGN);
from the patch and now wdm seems to work. But I am not sure if the patch
still solves the problem it was intended to solve -:(
