No experience with USB scanners, but a workaround is to get a network enabled
scanner.  We have the Laserjet 4345mfp and 4100mfp, which can scan documents 
and e-mail them to yourself or anyone else via an SMTP server. As a bonus, 
the models we have can also be used as a copy machine, printer, and 
fax.
