Yes, we support multiple companies from a central server farm.
Interesting. Are you delivering JDS or MS Windows as a service?
We do only MS Windows at this moment since there is no Dutch JDS yet and
a lot of the current branch applications require MS Word to do mail
merge, document generation, etc.
Another issue for delivering JDS is that SSRS does not run in zones yet.
I think this should happen first to get the right scaling an security
benefits from the system.
Or have you found some other solution?
My opinion on a centrally-managed, consumer-oriented Sun Ray service
is that one would need to be very careful to target the right consumer
group.
I totally agree.
I can also imagine that there are consumers who want both. A pc to play
and a Sunray for e-mail, web and "production" related tasks. You can
than screw up the pc and still be able to read your e-mail ;-)
I can imagine the Sunray can becomes a household appliance like a tv.
You can't do everything with the tv but still most people spend more
than an hour a day in front of the screen.
A lot of households have 3 tv sets, 3 pc's is hard to manage and keep up
to date but 3 Sunrays is easy especially if its a service.
In order to get to this point however you need consumer prices say $50
for a Sunray and fast scalability of the servers.
I think the right order to get to the consumer would be:
SME businesses
SME businesses working at home
Selected consumer groups.
Broader consumer availability.
I estimate the whole process will take 10 years at the rate we are going
now.
I have been working 10 years with thin clients up to now (javastations,
sunrays, etc.) and I must say that things are looking brighter every
year. I am hoping we will get some acceleration in the thin client
market the next few years though.
