It sounds like the answer is "no", since you say you see the xdm login
screen.
The odd thing is that when you log out you should automatically get another
login screen, xdm should keep spawning X servers and keep managing the
screen. Do you see any errors in any of the logs?
xdm is really not a supported display manager - we used it for some
initial bringup/prototyping with Linux, but gdm is the supported display
manager for Linux. It's possible that the xdm code has not been
maintained and is not fully functional. It certainly is not part of our
standard QA test cycle.
I would recommend building gdm from source...
