I know that SRSS support on Linux was just another step for SRSS, but
considering there seems to be a large interest in running SRSS on Ubuntu,
I wonder when an official port will become available.

We've discussed it, but there are no plans for
such a port at this time. Traditionally Ubuntu
has been one of the more "bleeding edge" distros,
which is at odds with our desire to provide SRSS
on the most stable Linux platforms, hence our
pursuit of SLES and RHEL.

It's true that recently Ubuntu has taken a
different tack with their "Enterprise" distro
branch, but that's a recent development and I
think we'd like to see the story play out a little
before we trust that it'll achieve the appropriate
balance of stability vs new features, and jump on
the bandwagon (what would we drop? We only
have limited resources and each new platform
consumes a lot of time from developers as well
as test engineers).

Even the Ubuntu website makes no commitment
regarding how often they will release Enterprise
versions, or even a commitment that they will
continue to do so in future! From
<http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/releases>:

In addition to the regular six-monthly releases, the Ubuntu team may make an Enterprise Release (based on an existing time-based release), also known as a "Long Term Support (LTS)" release, that has received additional stabilization, polish and translation work.

I would find the term "may" somewhat disturbing if I
were basing my business on Ubuntu. So far Ubuntu
has released a total of one such release I believe.

Opinions expressed above are mine, not my employers.

Sun and Canonical are getting cozy lately. I for one would be happy to
see official news or an official release.

Cheers,
