Do you have the right ports open on the firewall? http://docs.sun.com/source/820-0411/new_nw_config.html#50429978_43267

Craig,

I'm close but no cigar just yet. My remote SR 270 is now running GUI4.0_48_2007.08.01.15.48. I have manually configured the DTU for remote access. It appears to connect to the remote server as the DTU shows up in the SR 3.1 Adminiatation "Current Desktops" list. I can edit its properties. I see it listed on the Sun Ray Sessions screen. I can see in the messages log the results of turning it on and inserting/removing smart cards. I can ping the DTU from the server. I don't see any suspicious error messages in the logs. So everything looks as I would expect except that the DTU never presents a login screen,

The power on sequence cycles through ODS 1 > 21 > 22D > 26 D > 14 D in quick succession. After OSD 14D it reverts back to 26D and stays there. No graphical login screen is presented. Any idea what have I missed?

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
You are going to have to be running SRSS 4 FW. Easiest way is to grab the beta. http://www.sun.com/software/sunray/get_beta.jsp

With that said, we are close to GA on the product so you might want to wait.

Once you have the new firmware you'd do a stop M from a Sun Keyboard or Ctrl+Pause+M on a non-sun keyboard. Note in the GA version you will have the choice of offering two FW images. 1) with the configuration settings or 2) without.

You could extract the FW from the beta and just flash your DTU. I'd recommend this over doing a full install of the beta since there is no supported upgrade from beta to GA.

Craig,

I have a brand new Sun Ray 270 but I don't seem to be able to find documentation on how to hard code the appropriate settings to run the 270 from home to SR 3.1 server in the remote office. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Mike

Or a DNS server, or with the new FW you can hard code it in.

You have to have a DHCP server give the Sun Ray the correct options on your local home network. I use any old linux box to make a dhcp server on it and give the correct options. I'm not sure if this is the only option, if anyone else knows please let us know. I learned the options from here: http://www.cse.nd.edu/~striegel/HowTo/WANRay.html

Objective = to be able to connect a Sun Ray on my home office network to a Sun Ray server at a remote location

Network description = My home office network sits behind a PIX firewall. My customer has a Sun Ray 3.1 network running (at a school). The school is connected to its district office via network 10; the district office connects to the Internet. The district office has opened a VPN for me to remotely manage the SR server. Currently, I can ssh, telnet or http, etc. to the Sun Ray server at the school from any device on my home/office network.

My next step is to place a SR 270 on my home network to be connected to the SR server at the school. How do I configure the local SR 270 and/or the remote SR server so that the local SR 270 will attach via the VPN to the SR server at the school?

Thanks, Mike
