Yes, but I have reduced memory use by 1gb so far which is pretty cool.

Yep, it is a bit frustrating that all the xnewts show up in monitor as
root processes so I can't see why some use a lot more memory than
others. I don't really know what xnewt does but I saw it's options
included font directories which is why I wondered about getting rid of
some fonts I never use.

Yeah firefox is a huge pig, especially when it loads acrobat and/or flash.

Is RSS Resident Memory?

While it would be good to improve memory useage of all this stuff I had
simply started on what seemed a really obvious hog. Generally RAM is not
a problem (although I do need to get the kids to close down firefox
every couple of days to free up it's waste).
