It looks as if my issues were network related in the end.

The TS load balancer had gotten a bit tired and emotional.  Windows for you.  Rebooted and all is well.

Thanks for you help guys.

I am seeing this in the logs

Nov  2 12:58:56 portal kioskcritd[23365]: [ID 468419 user.info] Info: a
critical application has exited.
Nov  2 12:58:56 portal Terminating Kiosk Primary Session ( pid=25591 )

These messages just indicate that your session script is exiting regularly. I cannot tell from you log excerpt whether the sessions have lived shorter than they should.

Any ideas as to what has gone wrong ?

I am also seeing files such as this in /tmp.....utku100swup.trc

which has

user is not registered
HOMEDIR=/var/opt/SUNWkio/home/utku100/.softwareupdate/1c6872c7
HOMEDIR=/var/opt/SUNWkio/home/utku100/.softwareupdate/1c6872c7 did not exist
The Notification Application cannot run.
User is not running on the primary display
or is running remotely.

does this have any significance ?

No. This is from the /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/1001.swupnot script, which (correctly, really) decides that the current session should not run the Software Update Notification Application and is somewhat too verbose about it.

That file under /tmp should go away when the associated kiosk session (here for user utku100) goes away.
