Editing gdm.conf like that only changes the backing-store option for the
display :0, the X server running on the system console. It has no effect
on Sun Ray or any other X servers.

The resolution for 6510494, delivered in 124388-01, turns on backing
store by default for the Sun Ray 'Xnewt' X server. No configuration file
edits are required. After installing the patch you can confirm that
backing store is available by running 'xdpyinfo' in a Sun Ray session
and looking for "backing-store YES" in the "options" list.

6510494 is also resolved in SRSS 4.0, so you could get the behaviour
you want by upgrading to 4.0 instead of patching your 3.1.1.
