What we do here, in a smaller but otherwise similar setup, is to have one
system running SRSS. This system is running a Linux distribution with KDE.

The system is configured so that it is *not* possible to (accidentally) run the
software we develop. Instead, we have a number of other systems on which we run
distributed build jobs, debuggers, vmware etc. etc.

This ensures that the desktop is always responsive. Nobody will ever start up a
large job on the "desktop server" (SRSS), causing interactivity problems for
others.

I'd definitely recommend such a setup. It allows people to hit the development
systems really hard - you can run the jobs you need to, without thinking about
being "nice" to everyone else.

Second benefit is, that you can run a good Linux distribution with a proper
desktop environment, while still running precisely the OS you need for
development. You just 'rsh' from the SRSS system to one of the developer
systems - with shared home directories and working xauth, it's like it was the
same computer (except you have *both* a stable development environment *and* a
proper desktop).

Good luck!
