thank you very much, that fixed it! However, are there any
disadvantages in completely disabling xmodmap? I'd rather like to
modify gnome to disable xmodmap (or to fool gnome to use /bin/true or
whatever instead of xmodmap).

Now on to fixing my right shift key =)
