This may not be related, but at one point I found that feeding input characters to sup too quickly caused it to crash. I was using X cut-and-paste as a kind of poor-man's macro facility when I ran into this. If I recall correctly, the string I was cut-and-pasting into sup was this: T=N=a$ which was supposed to tag all messages, mark them as read, and archive them. I think it was crashing when it got to the "$", but it might have been the "a" that did it.
