Helllllllp!
I've set up my mom-in-law's C600 (formerly known as my C600). She, and
it, are now 1,000 miles away. Here's what she has:
Sonnet G3/300/150/1mb
Built-in video (Matrox won't work with her old 13" Apple monitor for
some reason)
112 mb RAM
OS 8.6
Free PPP Setup
GV 56K modem (serial)
Epson Stylus 600 printer (serial)
I did it mostly so she can video-phone her daughter and toddler
grandson. That part works. What's not working is the only part I
couldn't set up before shipping the machine (because I didn't have
custody of the printer): the seemingly simple task of using the Chooser
to select the Epson for the printer port.
When she (or I, via Timbuktu HouseCall) tries to choose the square
"Printer" icon in the Chooser, it gives a dialog box that it won't
accept the setting. Something about "Either the port is in use by
something else, or AppleTalk is active." AppleTalk, needless to say, is
not active -- at least, it says it isn't, and there's no network
connection of any sort. Just the serial modem.
Dismissing for the moment the possibility that the printer port actually
IS in use by the modem (which I'm not there to check in person), what
else could cause this otherwise-humming C600 to keep on (serially?)
rejecting a change of Chooser setting?
I've already swung and missed once with Grandma, with a NuBus machine.
Now I've handed off my own trusty C Series to keep it from happening
again -- and I sure don't want it to!
Grateful for any suggestions you can offer,
Tony
