Just something to think about.....I would like to suggest an external reader
instead of downloading pics off the camera.
I used to shoot for a regional newspaper and we used card readers instead of
using the camera firewire port. I know it's all electronics but there was a
feeling that it would be less wear/tear on the camera if the card was removed
and downloaded through a reader.
And back in '99, using a SCSI card reader was somewhat faster then using the
firewire port. And there are other advantages as well, such as the camera not
being tied up during downloading, etc.
We also had powerbooks and it was very convenient with their card slots.
(This was before powerbooks were equipped with firewire, but I would still
prefer to use a card slot.)
One more thing to consider - if we used the camera port (USB or Firewire), we
always made sure to use the AC adapter for the camera. You don't want to risk
losing images - it can happen sometimes - if the camera battery poops out on
you during a file transfer.
The newspaper went all out in '99 - two camera bodies and assortment of lenses
for each of us. But the best decision they made was to issue eight batteries
and about eight large capacity cards each. On a smaller scale for home use, I
highly recommend an assortment of cards of different capacity and go with
reputable brands with good after sales service.
(Prompt replacement and data recovery if the card craps out on you.)
1999 was eons ago and I have no idea where things are with manufacturers.
Lexar is what we used but large capacity IBM microdrives have made great
strides with some hiccups along the way.
