Well Nancy has come up with the best answer sofar! While perhaps all the answers were correct in a way... No one mentioned you can get more then 256 colors using the on board 1mb video! I used my C500 for a long time without a PCi video card. I'm going by memory here but here is what i remember. A lot will depend on the monitor size you are using which you didn't give us in your question. My Apple multi-sync 15 inch monitor did millions of colors (Yes !) at 640 x 480 settings and thousands of colors at 800x 600. You may have to choice all settings rather then recommended settings in monitor controls. A 17 in monitor maybe able to do thousands of colors at 640x 480 but 800x 600 would likely be 256 colors.
