(somebody at ATi leaked a small amount of Re: info about upcoming Macs a day or so before Jobs's Macworld keynote Re: speech once --- huge no no --- within a few weeks Apple had a new Re: "favorite" supplier.
heh heh- I hate it when that happens. Re: Re: To answer your question, if you have drivers for different Re: manufacturers the OS will load what it needs and ignore the rest for Re: the most part. The OS will also sometimes include software for certain Re: Apple monitors that may not be present. But since you're a geek like Re: us, you'll disable any software for hardware not present to completely Re: avoid any chance of things getting mucked up. It's easy to do. geeks rule the world Re: > Is the ROM capable of running a video card by itself or does there Re: > have to be an OS involved?? Re: Re: It has to. One of the things the system does upon boot is look for a Re: monitor, and it can't see the monitor without seeing first a video Re: system. Although you mentioned yours sounded as if the OS was loading Re: from the hard drive with no video card/monitor connected, so that's a Re: new one to me. In my little world I'm normally exposed only to Macs Re: with at least built-in video. So normally, if it doesn't find a video card and/or monitor it would error and not load the OS? If that's the case then I don't know what it's doing but the drive sure spins a long time. I still have to get a keyboard too but they are available locally I just haven't made it over there yet. Re: Re: To verify this, turn it on and wait until all hard drive activity Re: ceases. Press the Power button on the keyboard (you may hear a beep). Re: Press Return. If the OS had loaded fully, pressing the keyboard's Power Re: key and then Return would cleanly shut down the computer. Cool- I gotta write that one down somewhere. Re: Obviously the Rage is the better card, especially if it's a Rage 128. Re: I agree- (and yes they are Rage 128's) with so many recommendations from everyone on the list, the availability of them on ebay and the fact that they also work with Linux quite well there is no other choice-or at least not in the $30 price range. It looks like I'll have about $110 total invested (barring any complications)and not including some of this junk I've had lying around for a decade or so- I can live with that.
