If you copy the CD-Rom extension (CD-Rom 5.3.1) from OS 7.6 back into either 8.6 or 9.0, the Matshita will work.
3.) If my imac version of 8.6 will not work, are there any sources for 8.5 (I have the update to 8.6 on another CD) that cost less than, say, $40?
I looked around and I do have an 8.5 install CD that I no longer need. If it comes to that, we can talk off list about how I might get it to you.
4.) My sister bought OS 9.0 to update her G3 (and now she has moved on to system 10.1). Will system 9.0 (with updates) run on this machine WITHOUT the Sonnet G3 L2 accelerator?
Up to OS 9.1 will install and work on S900's without any special voodoo. I would try installing OS 9 first, then upgrade via Apple's site to 9.1.
