Sandy,I do have a router...I have a *gasp* PC that has had a USB dsl modem for quite some time. Recently, I upgraded to an ethernet modem, bought the router and prepared to be a happy camper. Except I can't get the connection made. When I called my ISP to find out what I was missing (as in, how in the heck to set the thing up), I found out that I need something that's not available in OS 8.5. (And it's been a bit since I called so I don't remember exactly what that was!) I had a big work project so I didn't worry about it...but now that I'm back to it, it's a land of confusion. There seems to be version 9 for iMac, version 9 for B/W G3 and above, version 9 that works for all...and it appears from my search that 9.2 will not work with my system at all. (I have an S900 with G3 upgrade, 198 RAM.) Anyway, I really hoped that it would be as simple as plugging in a cord, but alas! that's not the case. Thanks for the thought. Sigh.
Why must you upgrade? If you have enough RAM, OS9 is not a bad upgrade to do, but I hate being told by someone I'm buying a service from that I *have* to upgrade. I'm assuming that you are adding a cable or dsl modem to the household. Probably the easiest thing to do is to spend the $40 on a router to stick between your s900 and the modem. I got a new 4 port 10/100 Mb/s SMC that is capable of DHCP (cable) or PPPOE (dsl) for under $50 shipped. If it's a cable modem, 8.5 should work as is - it's just not likely to be 'supported' by your provider (that's where we come in
