Hi all,

Seeing all the talk about Keyspan USB cards gives me hope somebody out there
can assist.

I'm hoping the collective braintrust can help me out on a problem I'm
having. I've been trying to upgrade my father's J700 enough to allow him to
use his digital camera (or mine) with it. I picked up a USB card which was
(supposedly) PCI Mac-compatible, but now seem to be having trouble with it.

When the camera is attached to the system, we get disk activity, and then
the system freezes. If I remove the cable from the camera, the system
unfreezes, but immediately tells me that the "disk" is unformatted and needs
to be initialized (it's seeing the 128MB Memory Stick or the CF card). Of
course, the device is no longer attached, so I don't have the option of
continuing.

I tried attaching a memory stick reader, but when I insert a stick into the
reader it tells me I need driver updates for an eUSB Memory Stick reader,
which it can't find automatically (and I haven't been able to track down).

I've found references to the possibility that file exchange wasn't installed
/ running, but the extension is there and it's turned on.

I've tried the USB card in three slots; in C1 (I think) it wasn't recognized
at all; in A1 and B1 it shows up as a USB card, and the USB bus is added to
the list of possible buses in Apple System Profiler.

Here are the details of the system:

J700
64MB memory
OS: 9.1 (USB support recently re-installed as part of trouble-shooting)

and the card:

Card name: pci1045,c861
Card rev.: 16
Card Vendor ID: 1045

and finally the memory stick reader:

Mass Storage (eUSB MemoryStick Reader)
Product ID: 788 ($314)
Shuttle Technology (SCM Microsystems Inc.)
Driver version: not available
Driver name: Not available
Release Number: 5.0.7
Serial number:12

I've seen references to others successfully using the same card in PCI Macs,
though I haven't seen a reference to Supermacs (the reference indicated the
card was labelled as a Belkin; the one in my dad's machine was purchased
from Future Shop as a "Cicero" card, their in-house brand).

So, does anybody have any idea what I should try next? I suspect there's
something going on with the mass storage drivers, but have no clue what it
could be.

Thanks in advance,

Ian ten Cate
