Hello again, I described my situation to which David Wasser wrote:
From: "David Wasser" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [SM] Is my hard drive dead? Sadly, it sounds like your HD has gone to platter heaven :-( The probable reason why your computer will not start when you remove the 2GB drive, is that that device terminates the SCSI bus. When you remove the drive, the SCSI bus is unterminated, which makes it difficult or impossible for the computer to reliably access anything else on the SCSI bus (ie: your other hard drive, CD ROM drive, etc.). You should be able to remove this drive, but you will then need to enable SCSI termination on the last device on your SCSI bus (I'm guessing this would be your 8GB drive). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------- Thanks David, I still want to use this computer and perhaps move up to OSX. For that I will need to replace the original 2 Gig "platter". It looks like I need something with a SCSI 50 pin connector or capable of using a 50 pin adapter. There appear to be many on Ebay. I'm probably looking for something in the 9 to 18G range. Are there any concerns to moving to 10k rpm? I see Quantum, IBM, Seagate, etc. Any recommendations out there? Are the 4 pin power connections standard? Can a 1.5" depth unit be used in the space where the original was found? Any and all advice would be appreciated. I'm not ready to buy another computer.
