Dear list,

I bought a large Maxtor160 GB drive because of the rebates and thought I
would get the Sonnet ATA 133 from OWC to run it in the S-900 but I wasn't
aware that putting that card in the top slots was critical or that I would
need a fan for the drive. Is that absolute? If it is, particularly in
regard to the fan, can anyone give me step by step instructions and a place
to order the fan. I am a neophyte in this regard, particularly nervous
about plugging in wires to the power supply.

Mark

If anyone has any advice on where to get a replacement SCSI drive for the
one that seemed to have gone south (I can load files on it, if I boot from
a 9.1 CD, but I can't check it with Disk First Aid or reformat it so that
after a low level or initializing it will take a system or check out.
Norton seems to have totally corrupted it when it stalled in the midst of a
media check.)

I've not heard of anyone needing to run a fan on the ATA controlers. However if your running a hard drive which runs hot it maybe a good idea to add a fan in the case. I added a fan to the cage made for one which is behind the front vertical hard drive space which is behind the speaker. machine runs cool with 3 hard drives and 1 cd rom drive in case.
I can tell you both the Sonnet ATA 100 and 133 PCI cards and the VST/Promise ATA 66 cards all need to be in either PCI slot 1 or 2(they are all so called Promise cards with FirmTek firmware)
The Acard family of ATA PCI cards can be used in any PCI slot! These include:
Sonnet ATA 66
Acard ATA 66/100/133 cards
SIIG 133 ATA card
Miglia 133 ATA card (mostly sold in Europe)

SIIG ATA 133 card has the best warranty 5 years and usually the best price. OWC has for around $74.00 All the Acard family of cards are made by Acard and seem to be the same exact cards. later Will S
