a caution about inexpensive raid:

when they call the software softRaid, they mean just that. the RAID
is being done by software, not by the controller board. the only
special feature the controller board has is support for booting from
RAID disk systems.

the phrase "you get what you pay for" is very much operative here;
RAID the way it's done by the big boys is a much more expensive
proposition than RAID 0 or RAID 1 in consumer grade electronics.
they're paying for ultimate reliability (and maybe getting it, maybe
not, which is a separate, offtopic discussion.) in order to get that,
you need hardware RAID on a controller with a battery backed
onboard cache, and SCSI (because non-serial ATA/IDE drives
are unsuitable for high reliability/high performance applications.)
