Thanks for the ideas Drew!

Turns out it WAS a fan, not the power supply or case fan but the fan on the
CPU heat sink. I forgot how many fans were in there.

As soon as I got the case open though, I remembered that I had this same
problem a year or two ago, and fixed it the same way:

Pulled the CPU card, took the fan off, cleaned all the dust off everything,
put a drop of oil on the fan bearings (it looks to my untrained eye like a
REALLY cheap fan.) put everything back together and I'm back in action, good
as new.

Gave me something to do while my girlfriend was watching the season finale
of "The Bachelorette" or whatever that was.
