After reading about the Radeon flashing possibilities, I ordered the Power
Color 64MB from New Egg this week.

Today, with the instructions and help from list folks (thanks Dan S.) I
tried to flash the card. The problem was that every time (I tried about six
times) I got a Write Error. Here is the error message.

    Serial Rom
    Bios Device ID = 0x5159
    ASIC Device ID = 0x5159
    Flash Type = ST
    Error: write error at 65536

Error 0FL01

This is the error everyone with a 64k ROM is reporting. Will's reply about "how difficult the PC is compared to a Mac" has nothing to do with this. In fact it makes no sense! The fact that this can be done on a PC and not on a Mac shows that PCs are more flexible!

Anyways, If your "2 step process" results in a card that works in your Mac then just go with that. Lots of folks have reported that neither method will work with a 64K ROM card.

Also, is your PowerColor card the only video card in your PC when you attempt to flash it? Some people say that it's better to have 2 cards in your PC, and have your monitor attached to the other card while you flash the Radeon. I've never done it this way - mainly because the PC I used to flash my cards is so old it wouldn't boot with 2 video cards in it! Perhaps you can give that a try? Also, maybe try the card in a different slot?

I stand by my statement and believe it to be correct info!
I welcome corrections and updated info when it is correct and or helps to get results. I make plenty of mistakes but don't believe this to be one of them ;-)

Flexibility of the PC or more likely not has nothing to do with why this works. It works because the only difference in a PC Radeon and a Mac Radeon is the firmware. It is also done on a PC because ATI has managed to keep the Mac flasher programs locked up and no one has yet made a Mac flasher program for the 7000 card.Which means there is no other way to do it. Using the PC to do the flashing is the weak point of doing the flashing plain and simple. If we had a Mac flashing program a child could do it
;-) and you wouldn't have to get your hands dirty with dos.

If the card really has a 64k flash ROM it won't work since the flash firmware for the Mac is 128K. But as far as I know all cards have flash ROMS labeled as 64K and the ones that do work are mislabeled. This includes my Sapphire from last Feb. it's flash ROM is labeled as being the 64mb chip but as reported by the flash firmware it is clearly the 128k chip.
So it has only been in the last few months that cards have started showing up with correctly labeled 64k chips . These are the ones that don't work. So since it is only recently that correctly labeled cards have shown up I think it likely ATI is cracking down and enforcing licensing agreements with card makers.ATI doesn't want us flashing these cards to Mac and it was only a matter of time before steps would be taken. However at this time we don't know the why of mismarked chips other then I don't think any PC cards have correctly marked 128K chips but it is possible there are some.
I do agree one step 2 step which ever works is great! You only have to use dos once then can junk that PC ;-) Sorry devil made me say it ;-) I own a PC which I used for Video work. Since OSX and all the wonderful Video apps which were mostly missing or way too expensive in OS 9 and older I no longer really need nor use it much. Best of luck with your card flashing. Will S
