If you are just connecting the computers together (and aren't trying to get
internet over the ethernet cables too, like from a cable modem) you'll just
need one "CROSSOVER" Ethernet cable.

My personal setup uses a router (to share the internet between the two Macs
and two PCs) and so I'm just using several "straight through" Ethernet
cables.

I've been very pleased with my 4 port DI-704 router/switch from D-Link. So
much that I bought another off eBay (for just $10!) to set up a network at
my parents' house as well.

You only need a router if you want to share a high speed internet connection
between your computers, or if you want to be able to have more than one
connected to a dial-up connection at once.
