xandr, Maybe someone else on the list has a better idea, but I would do the following: 1. First run Norton Disk Doctor or Disk First Aid. Fix any errors. Reboot and rebuild the desktop by holding down Command+Option. If you still get errors, remove all 3rd party extensions from the extensions folder. Gradually add them back, rebooting after adding a few at a time. This may help you track down a problematic extension. If this doesn't help, go to step 2. 2. Drag your Mac OS and Finder preferences from /System Folder/Preferences to the trash. Empty trash. Reboot and rebuild the desktop by holding down Command+Option. If this doesn't help, go to step 3. 3. Remove all 3rd party RAM. If you still see errors, remove all external SCSI devices (if present). You may have bad RAM, or a badly terminated SCSI device on your SCSI chain. If this doesn't help go to step 4. 4. Remove and re-seat all of your remaining RAM, PCI cards and processor card. Press and hold the CUDA switch on the motherboard for seven seconds. It is located next to the very bottom PCI slot. Reboot. If this doesn't help go to step 5. 5. If you have access to another hard drive, try it after removing the hard drive(s) that are currently being used. If this doesn't help go to step 6 6. If you have access to another computer, try your components in that second computer and see if you still get errors. If this doesn't help go to step 7. 7. If 1-5 still causes errors, but 6 doesn't, your power supply may be going bad.
There really isn't any reason a computer can't keep running so long as you replace the parts that fail as a result of age (hard drive, power supply, cdrom drive etc.). I'm assuming, of course, that you haven't overclocked your processor, and that you have already completely re-formatted your hard drive clean and done a clean install of Mac OS 9.1. Good luck.
