Thanks Steve, Sam I had upgraded to OS 9.1 a long time ago but for some reason it never updated the USB extension to 1.4.6. I deleted the older extension and reinstalled and the card is working.
Although it is a USB 2.0 card it is OHCI compliant Now I can clear off all the pictures on my Christmas present digital camera which was the only reason I added the USB card in the first place.
