Hi All,
I am refitting a C600 for a friend who desires to have a CD-writer drive in addition to the CD-ROM drive. The obvious way is to add a SCSI CD-R or CD-RW drive in the bay directly underneath the CD-ROM drive (which I have replaced with an origina Apple SCSI unit). However, instead of an IDE hard drive I put in a SCSI hard drive (set as ID 1), leaving the ATA bus available, as I do not have a SCSI CD-R or CD-RW drive at hand.
After replacing the original IDE cable with a longer one known to be good, pulled from a Mac G3 Gossamer, I tested it with a Lite-On CD-RW and Apple System Profiler saw it and Toast 4.1.3 identified it correctly. But I have some earlier IDE CD-RW drives lying around I thought it would be a good idea to have them redeployed, and the problem appeared:
Apart from the Lite-On (which I want to keep for myself), neither a JVC and a Philips CD-RW was found by ASP, thus Toast could not find it either, but when put into a FireWire case, both drives were identified correctly in my other FireWire-equipped Macs, and the Philips (CDD4801/81, firmware 1.5.. any idea on how to update the firmware?) even functioned natively on my G4 running 10.2.8.
I would be most grateful if some light can be cast upon this question, I must admit I am completely baffled by it.
Thanks,
Sam.
