If you're talking about booting from a FireWire drive connected to a SuperMac... I don't believe you can use it as a startup drive. If you have a partition available on a SCSI drive or better still, a ATA drive, remove Jaguar from that partition and install Panther in an the space. It sounds like you have the correct software. Overwriting Jaguar can be a problem.
I'm sorry that I didn't get to read the earlier parts on this thread. Advice might have been given so I apologize if I'm covering the same ground. On my S900 my slow and fast SCSI drives did not show up in X. The thing that did the job was the installation of an ATA card and 80 gig ATA drive... starting with Jaguar and now humming along at its best ever with 10.3.7. You need to take care of other things too like a better video card-Radion 32 megs for example, and a large amount of RAM. Wish you success.
