Take a look at http://www.daugerresearch.com/pooch/ to see what it going on with supercomputing using macs. There is one page about how a 6th grader set up a cluster in Hawaii.
What may be more important is that you can use machines at different locations to thrash away. So, if you need five machines or ten, your problem gets to be to find 5 or ten people with macs who are not using them on the weekends (like libraries or schools) or late at night (private persons) and set up a distributed system.
It depends totally on the type of problems you are working on but this software from dauger is purchasable on a sliding scale and you can expand it to fit the needs of your calculations with ease.
d, in Florida, wishing I had bought stock in this dauger company.
hi folks,
i recently rejoined the list because i needed to decide between upgrading my S900 again, or going with a new box. i've pretty much decided that it makes more sense to get a newer box.
the work i do is very computation intensive. using my S900 with a G4/400/200 metabox processor and 256M of RAM, a single calculation can require anywhere from 1-250 hours of CPU time. yeah! so, to get maximum bang for the buck, i need some answers and some advice i can rely on.
given the nature of the tasks i need to perform, how important is frontside bus speed? i'm guessing that it's at least as important as processor speed, because the CPU and the RAM must be doing a lot of talking during the execution. isn't that what frontside bus speed relates to, or am i off track here? if not, then i need to consider bus speeds as well as processor speeds when deciding between a new G5 or a slightly older G4, right?
surfing the auctions, i saw specs on a G5 imac that had a 600MHz frontside bus speed. are there faster motherboards in the newest G5 powermacs? in comparison, what are the bus speeds of 1GHz or faster G4 powermacs?
does anyone have any other advice?
TIA,
john
