For this kind of problem I connect an external scsi drive with a system 9.1
(complete and tested OK) on the umax.

Then I disconnect the disk inside and i try to restart.

If it works, i reconnect the inside drive and mount it, then I check the
volume with TechTool pro... And save what I can.

Also you can try to boot from a system CD... But the problem is that sys 8.0
and before don't recognize HFS volumes - so use at least 8.1
