Sonnet's engineering has historically been second rate, but generally more affordable. Of course any entity may change with time, but going all the way back to the 680x0 days (before Power PCs) Daystar sold excellent 68030 and 68040 upgrades which worked well and Sonnet sold slightly less expensive upgrades which did not work with virtual memory.

And now the G4/800 doesn't work with OSX--although I must say that I'm impressed with their solution to the G4/six slot issue (only 9x00 and PTP, not S900). That's a fairly subtle bus contention issue and I'm surprised they solved it.

For what it's worth, the fact that Sonnet has such a long history of economized engineering, also means that the company has been around a really long time by computer standards. After all, they outlasted Daystar and NewerTech.

All good points and many people are happy with their Sonnet upgrades. Sonnet as you may know sells many products besides CPU upgrades. ATA & SATA cards & Video cards to name two. They are re-branded products from other companies. All of which can be bought for $10.00 or more in savings from other companies. There was a small mention some time back regarding Sonnets CPU's. It seemed to be saying that Sonnet's CPU upgrades were engineered and made by Japanese company unknown in the North American market. If true would explain a lot. I've not been able to find out any more as to if Sonnet makes their CPU's or not.It has also been mentioned that the break through on the 6 PCI slot upgrades came from the Newer tech people Sonnet got after Newer tech went under.
There is no doubt that the Sonnet Marketing division are as good as they get. IMHO their marketing people are responsible for the companies success. I'm not nearly as impressed with the marketing division's ethics. They came close to promising a solution for OSX with the L2 cpu upgrades. They kept saying we're working on it and it will be ready any day now. Mean while the tech people had already told a number of people it was never going to happen. It wasn't until the L2 upgrades quit selling that they admitted they had failed at an OSX solution for the L2 cards. They also got rapped pretty hard even from OWC's owner. This was for over clocking CPU's in their upgrades and selling them for the same price as ones that weren't over clocked. Customers had no way of knowing which they were getting. They also did a great job of getting product into retail stores. Fry's for example has Sonnets products on the shelf. None of the other upgrade companies ever managed this as far as I know. Will S
