Actually, if you're shopping for a late-model g4 - either single processor or
dual processor - I would suggest that you consider buying one that is
"dual-bootable". That is, a model that can boot from _both_ OS 9.x and OS
10.x. There are some g4s that are OS X bootable ONLY.

This will give you full "backward compatibility" if you need it for the time
being, but if you pick the right g4, you'll have adequate power for OS X as
well.

Be aware that not all the dual-processor g4's are "dual-bootable". The 1.42ghz
models, to my knowledge, are not. I think the thing to check for is the type
of Firewire that comes on the motherboard. If the g4 has Firewire 800, it is
probably OS X bootable only. Those models with Firewire 400 are more likely to
be dual-bootable.

I have a g4/1.25ghz dual-processor MDD (mirror drive door), that is one of the
last batch of OS-9 bootable Macs (got it only a month before they discontinued
the g4). Also, the fastest OS-9 Mac ever made. But it runs OS 10.3.9
beautifully.

Actually, about the only time I'll boot it in OS 9.2.2 now to run my OS 9
version of Norton Speed Disk to defragment my OS X boot partition. Yes, I know
it is several years out-of-date now, but the last OS 9 version of Speed Disk
works great (at least for me) for optimizing my OS X boot volume, and it even
contains an optimization profile for "OS X".

If, on the other hand, you are absolutely SURE that the OS 9 applications you
use will run under Classic, you can skip "dual bootability". But be sure about
that first!

I would recommend one of the MDD models. These have _2_ bays suitable for CD
drives (you can put a DVD burner in one if you wish), and room for _4_
internal hard drives. They also have 3 PCI slots in addition to the AGP slot
for the video card.
