Is it possible that it is something from Adobe Reader? The next time this happens, try using Adobe Reader to open a PDF file that you already have. First, double-click on the PDF file to see if it opens in Adobe Reader. If that works, then close the PDF file and then try to open it via the File menu on the Adobe Reader menu bar.
