Okay, something which I did not think about when SM did its' auto
update on me!

I do not have any bookmarks left or so they are not appearing in the
new browser.

Are they lost forever or where can I go to find them? There are no
recent back ups.

Which SeaMonkey version did you upgrade from? I could only speculate you've upgraded from SM 2.0.* but then you've tried some SM 2.1+ version previously then gone back to SM 2.0.* using the same profile, and now you're experiencing this <http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.3/#issues>:

| Please read this before reporting any new bugs.
|
| * Data loss warning: If you use a profile with this or any later
| version and then try to go back to SeaMonkey 2.0, SeaMonkey will
| rename your history file to places.sqlite.corrupt and create a
| new places.sqlite file, effectively resetting your browsing
| history. This is because the internal format changed and the
| upgrade process only works in one direction.

This has been in the release notes since SM 2.1. It seems many people fall into this trap, but then they have not paid enough attention to read the important notes. I admit to have got the same issue during the beta testing, but then there's no problem to restore back if you pay some more attention and read, for example:
