2.10 is only beta quality right now. It can contain bugs that will be fixed until the final 2.10 is released - and in fact at least one bug (concerning bookmarks drag & drop AFAIR) is known which is in the latest 2.10 Beta 2 and which will only be fixed in 2.10 Beta 3.
To sum it up, you can safely install a beta version, but be prepared to face some issues.

There's a checkbox under Preferences/Mail & Newsgroups/Network & Storage/Disk Space. Use it to disable automatic compacting altogether. Alternatively, increase the threshold (same line).
