Is it possible that you are afflicted with bug #719413? See
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=719413>. This was fixed
in Thunderbird 16.0.

However, it might not have been fixed in SeaMonkey's mail-news until
later, possibly even later than your SeaMonkey/2.17. See the following
bug reports:
#330868 at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330868>
#765491 at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=765491>
