Yes, there is apparently a workaround for the password problem, but it's
awkward at best.

So--can anyone reassure me that I won't be bedeviled by problems if I
update? I'd really like to, but am hesitant right now.

Thank you for any thoughts and advice.

Ever since the rapid release change in SM it has not seemed wise to update each time a release comes out. I always wait a few days, check the comments here and make a decision. It seems that only ever 3 or 4 releases are worth installing. I feel like the ones in between are really more beta than ready for prime time. I really have not found anything I have lost by doing this, and many headaches I have avoided. I kinda knew this one would be a doosy since 2.26 had some big issues already and we skipped over 2.27 and 2.28 with not enough distribution to get real world testing done. If it were me I would hold off until at least 2.30. I just don't think the SM team is big enough anymore or has enough help to get enough testing and bug fixes done for every release so the users become the testers for the fixes to be the next release.
