Suggest using the full off-line installer after first uninstalling what
you have (lately the full installer has been offering to do that
anyway): https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
The uninstaller leaves some detritus, which I clean up. It may not be
necessary, not really sure.

Yes, I know about the security problem, which is why I keep it "turned
off" except when needed to scan in checks to my credit union.
Is there some problem with my system,such as missing extension or other
software feature? Or some other option of mine?
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated
