I've been using seamonkey for several months, but just two days ago,

Typically this happens when I'm loading a page from linked email, but
opening any new tab will produce the same result. I want my default
back: new tabs appear to the RIGHT of existing tabs, not to the LEFT,
and the close button is on the right of the tab, not the left. I
checked about:config, but didn't see anything. How do I change this
setting back?

Thanks!

Glenn, you typed "the close button is on the right of the tab" which
leads me to think that you've installed an add-on, as, on a plain
vanilla SeaMonkey Install, there is only one close button and it's on
the extreme right of the Tabs bar.

Maybe, if you disabled the add-on (Tools->Add On Manager), and re-boot,
you may get normal Tab Adding action back.

And why are you posting to a SeaMonkey news group, presumably about a SeaMonkey problem, with Google Chrome??
