Could it be that you need but don't have administrator rights to install it at all, or that an existing profile has incorrect permissions? Can _you_ locate the existing profile(s) and read any of its/their files? Are error message(s) you get if you open a command prompt and try to start SM from it any different than you reported in your OP?

Why don't you want to install it on the system drive? There is no need to keep SM profile(s) on the system drive. Profiles can be located anywhere you please, including someplace you can easily remember, find, backup and restore.
