In answer to your questions, Clif:

We're using ebase on a peer-to-peer network. It lives on my hard drive, and
I'm using a Dell Dimension L733r. Today, Windows Explorer, Microsoft
Outlook, and Microsoft Word were also running when this happened. I was the
host, with no other computers using ebase at the time. When I restarted, it
ran a consistency block check, and all was fine.

Ebase/FMPro5 has indeed frozen on us before, and yes, I've had to follow the
Admin Manual's instructions for restoring damaged files. I just did this
yesterday, which is perhaps when this latest problem developed.

In general, ebase runs fine on my computer, and VERY slowly on the others in
our network. The speed is doubly slow for others when they are guests,
rather than hosting. I must say that my colleagues are not too pleased with
the situation. I'd say it freezes or crashes about once every 2 weeks, and
I've probably had to restore damaged files 3-4 times in the past 4 months.

I think it's only a problem in the All Fields layout, though I haven't tried
them all (switching between Layout and Browse). I tried switching to All
Fields while in Browse mode (by adding it to the layouts menu), and that had
the same effect of crashing the program. I also opened a version of
names_.102, saved a month and a half ago, and that version has the same
problem: freezes when combining Browse mode with the All Fields layout. I
guess we've had this problem for a while and just hadn't activated it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Rachel

P.S. I'll be gone all of next week.

Tell me more, What kind of machine? What other programs are running? Is
FileMaker being hosted on a network? Is this only a problem in a layout
called "ALL Fields"? How does ebase run otherwise?

Having ebase lockup is a problem in more ways than one. Tell me what
FileMaker does when you restart after rebooting. Does it give you any file
errors, Have you ever had FileMaker crash and used Filemakers restore
command.
