I was attempting to fix the problem of there being no stable seednodes
that actually work. In other words, any new nodes (unless installed by
someone who knows what they are doing) will immediately fail, not talk
to any other nodes, and give no semblance of working. As opposed to the
usual behaviour of connecting to a few nodes and still not working :).
http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/seednodes.ref now contains several
stable noderefs, so if your stable node needs reseeding, you should be
able to do it. New nodes should be able to connect to several other
nodes and therefore become part of the network. As this will have
prevented new users from using freenet at all, it seemed to be a fairly
high priority.

I apologize for not following either the lists or my inbox closely over
the last few days, I got back from a short xmas break with a huge
backlog and it seemed more important to get multiplexing done on the
unstable branch. I will probably go through my mail tomorrow.

The best thing non-geek users can do is continue to run their nodes as
normally, and report any interesting behaviours or error messages. We
need people running nodes on both the stable and unstable branches; if
you run a node on the unstable branch, you must update your node every
24 hours. If you are running a permanent, reasonably stable node on a
reasonable broadband connection (DSL or cable modem), without any
special firewalling problems, you should contact me and we can talk
about using your node as a seednodes source. This is easier if you are
on linux or other unixen.

Meanwhile, on the stable branch, 5051 has a significant bugfix that
should improve the network performance, and on the unstable branch,
multiplexing has been committed, which should, once debugged (that may
take some time!), improve performance and reduce resource usage in a
variety of ways.
