I have the same familiar Windows problem when trying to start Freenet.
"Service did not respond to signal"
1) Windows XP 32bit SP3
2)Java 6.0.200.2
3) LocalService has write permissions
4) Event viewer states that: "Freenet background service failed to
start due to the
following error: the service did not respond to the start or
control request in a
timely fashion. Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the
Freenet background
service to connect.
5) I cannot connect to http://127.0.0.1:8888
