I am also bothered by the "Thread not downloaded" and "Reply not downloaded" messages that aren't. It would make sense to not have this happen.
Perhaps each message could be made to include a copy of the text of all of its thread ancestors, including their signatures. That way they could always be reproduced and attributed fully, even if the original message is no longer retrievable. Apart from this, Freetalk seems to be a very worthy replacement for Frost.
